Q&A WITH KIRSTY DAYMENT
We were lucky enough to sit down with the founder of Ambition Fashion, Kirsty Dayment who told us about her company and what it is like to be in the fashion industry.
TELL US WHY YOU DECIDED TO START AMBITION FASHION?
I was talking to a group of designers who all had one thing in common: they had fantastic designs and an amazing concept but they didn’t know how to market their brand, nor did they have the funds. I realised I had the contacts and experience to help upcoming designers break into the fashion industry. Combined with my love for Aussie labels, I wanted Ambition Fashion to be a business that supported that idea. I also used to trawl through website after website, and I couldn’t quite find what I was after, all in the one place. I felt the market was missing a one-stop shop filled with beautiful, unique and quality designs from Australian labels.
AS WELL AS RUNNING AMBITION FASHION ONLINE, YOU ALSO DO WHOLESALE FOR SOME OF YOUR EXCLUSIVE BRANDS. HOW DO YOU MANAGE EVERYTHING?
That’s what sets us apart though. Ambition Fashion isn’t only an online retail store, we’re also an agent for upcoming Australian designers. It does mean that the workload is double and day-to-day tasks are more challenging, but it’s all rewarding. Luckily, I have an amazing team behind me that has helped bring my vision true to life.
YOU’VE BEEN IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY FOR A LONG TIME, HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO GIVE UP?
Never. I think you either love fashion or you don’t – and if you do, and you’ve decided you want it as part of your career, you make it your life. That’s how I am with everything though – I put 150 percent into everything I do.
HOW WOULD YOU DIFFER AMBITION FASHION FROM OTHER FASHION DESTINATIONS?
As mentioned before, Ambition Fashion is a multi-faceted business. We’re an online store and a fashion agency. We’re always on the lookout for upcoming and talented designers who are wanting to break into the fashion industry but without the knowledge of how to do it. As their agent, we look after their marketing, PR, brand strategies and social media. As an online store, we don’t just stock apparel – we also have jewellery, shoes, bags… plus we have both men’s and women’s, which I think is rare these days. Another aspect is that we have a variety of price points. We have items as low as $30 and more splurge-worthy pieces for $400.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE CURRENT TREND?
I’m always busy running around all day, so I love the fact that sporteluxe is so trendy right now – I can get away wearing a cap (which is perfect for bad hair days), hair in pigtails and sneakers!
