INTERVIEW: JESSICA STEUART
This is Collective is fast becoming the go to site for industry insiders. Tell us about the concept.
I love profile pieces. I've always been drawn to feature articles on driven, career focused people. I used to tear out designer and brand profiles from magazines and stick them in a huge art book, kind of like an A-Z directory.
Moving to London was like arriving at a cross road - I wasn't sure if I wanted to stay working in Fashion PR or move into something different. I tried to find websites for inspiration that focused on profiles of creatives but couldn't find what I was really after. When speaking to some of my friends who have bravely started their own businesses, I found there were so many inspiring stories that I felt needed to be shared... So it began - This is Collective is an exclusive edit of interviews with inspiring, creative individuals from around the world.
Where does your insider fashion knowledge come from?
I've always loved fashion. Since university I have made it my career. I've learnt a lot about the industry through working for many years in PR and Styling and am addicted to fashion blogs and magazines. Style.com, Business of Fashion, StylemeRomy and Theyallhateus are my main go-to sites everyday among many others, the list is endless! Harpers Bazaar, Vogue, Elle, Russh and LOVE magazines are my weakness. I've also learnt a lot from friends in the industry, some of them I've interviewed for the site.
Who has been your favorite interview so far?
I can't pick a favorite! It was great fun working with fashion blogger Camille Charriere from Camille Over the Rainbow for a week long collaboration. Organizing and styling the first editorial shoot for This is Collective with SporteLuxe showcasing WatsonxWatson product with photographer Titus Pengelly was a highlight - organizing and facilitating a shoot in Sydney while being in London was an experience! I loved interviewing my close friends Libby and Somer from WatsonxWatson as I've seen their brand grow from the very beginning and am so proud of them. I learn something new from every interview.
What are your go-to fashion pieces?
My go-to fashion pieces are mainly accessories (and mainly all black!) At the moment my fail safe go-to fashion pieces are my Saint Laurent duffle bag, Ellery sunglasses, Valentino rockstud flats, Valentino wallet, H&M Icons leather jacket, Tom Binns and Amber Sceats rings.
What is next for This is Collective?
More exclusive shoots, behind the scenes previews, shopping guides and of course more exclusive interviews from a range of different industries, not just fashion.
Who are your favourite photographers to work with for the site?
Having recently started shooting exclusive content for the site, I've been working with a select few photographers. My boyfriend Marc is a very talented photographer and graphic designer and I love his work too. He has helped with a lot of the Art Direction for the site. I have also loved working with Titus Pengelly, Barry Craske and Benjamin Wheeler.
Who would your dream interview be?
Imran Amed, Founder and Editor of BoF - The Business of Fashion. I love this site, what started as a blog is now a powerhouse in the industry and I admire how Imran Amed has built the site up to what it is today. The Daily Digest updates are great!
You live in London now but do you still seek Australian content for your site?
Definitely yes! The initial idea to start This is Collective came from inspiration from friends in Australia and has since grown to include international interviews. I go back home a few times a year and like to keep up with what is going on in the Australian market. There are lots of great brands coming out of Australia and successfully making their mark on the rest of the world.
What is your preferred side of the business? Styling? Writing? The blog?
To be honest, I love it all! Styling, writing and the blog compliment each other and I love tying it together to see the finished product. Above all, I get the most satisfaction from meeting new people and finding out about their stories - I can't wait to share inspiring features and it is so rewarding when readers let me know that they feel the same way.
