JULIAN WILSON’S SERIOUS FUN
Coolum Beach on the Sunshine Coast, was host to a seriously fun weekend on the 9th of February. The event was organized by pro surfer and world number two Julian Wilson and Hurley. It was the second installment of Serious Fun, which welcomed a sea of pink-rashie wearing groms flocking to Coolum Beach as local, Julian, hosted a surf clinic that gave them a taste of what his childhood was like.
This year the event organisers ran both the all-ages fun day and the invitational WCT-style competition on the same day. This guaranteed that the groms stayed stocked all day, and that everyone else could watch the best under 16’s battle it out to decide who will be crowned the winner of Serious Fun 2019.
The free event was full of activities for kids to get involved in, such as The Hurley Printing Press and Board Art Tent where kids created custom art on their tees and boards.
They also got the chance to try out all the latest Julian Wilson products from JS Surfboards, Catch Surfboards, Thomas Longboards and FCS. From there, the kids could transform their hairstyles over at Ruby Blue Hair Salon or Captain Sip Sops Barbershop who treated them to everything from mullets to mohawks. A 9 hole putt-putt course was also set up as a nod to Julian’s passion for golf. After all the excitement they got to wind down with Amazon Power Acai, fill up their water bottles at Hydroflasks Hydration Station and relax at Oakleys Chill Out Zone.
The second half of the day took a more serious turn, when 14 of the best 16 years and under surfers in Australia and two international wildcards competed in a WCT-like contest, each individually chosen by Julian. The Oakley Expression Session took place in between the semi’s and the final’s, where the competitors were invited to put on a show for the spectators on the beach with their biggest and best tricks.
The pink theme of the event was in full force, acknowledging Julian’s efforts towards raising awareness for breast cancer. Julian was sporting the Hurley x Julian Wilson Phantom Nola Boardshort, with the original artwork designed by his mother Nola Wilson. This is the 10th boardshort that has been designed to help create awareness for the disease.
